Aerococcus urinae is a Gram-positive, catalase-negative coccus that was first described in the 1990s as a causative organism of urinary tract infections . A. urinae levels of 0.3 to 0.8% in urine specimens are reported, with a preponderance in patients with underlying urologic conditions (6, 8).

2016-01-01 2011-08-01 Aerococcus urinae and Aerococcus sanguinicola are relatively newcomers and emerging organisms in clinical and microbiological practice. Both species have worldwide been associated with urinary tract infections. More rarely cases of bacteremia/septicemia and infective endocarditis have been reported. Treatment options are therefore important. Aerococcus urinae (A.urinae) isanewcomer to clinical and microbiological practice.

[] described a urinary pathogen which they named ‘Aerococcus‐like organism (ALO)’.The bacterium was later named Aerococcus urinae[].This organism was subsequently reported in urinary infections in The Netherlands and the USA [3, 4], and it was noted that serious complications in the form of septicemia and endocarditis may arise from such infections [5, 6]. Aerococcus sanguinicola causes bacteremia (26), endocarditis (26), urosepsis (26) and cholecystitis (26). Aerococcus viridans Native Valve Endocarditis Article Aerococcus sanguinicola is similar to these species: Aerococcus urinae, Aerococcus viridans, Gaffkaemia and more.
De finns i miljön, men kan också isoleras från human hudflora. A. urinae och A.sanguinicola förekommer vid urinvägsinfektion, septikemi, endokardit och meningit.

Most Aerococcus species will grow in Salt Broth but A. sanguinicola is the only species that is usually Bile Esculin (+). Commercial ID systems have limited abilities to ID A. urinae/A. viridans and will not recognize A. sanguinicola.

Aerococcus sanguinicola is a member of the bacterial genus Aerococcus and is a Gram-positive, catalase-negative coccus growing in clusters. This species was defined in 2001 and has since then been increasingly recognized as a pathogen causing urinary tract infections and also invasive infections including infective endocarditis.

Aerococcus urinae is a pathogen that rarely causes severe or fatal infections. We describe four cases of severe A. urinae bloodstream infections. All patients had underlying urologic conditions.
